A federal judge has ordered the removal of President Donald Trump’s name from the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, calling the Trump administration’s rebranding of the prestigious institution illegal.

U.S. District Court Judge Christopher Cooper said in an opinion issued on May 29 that the Kennedy Center must remove Trump’s name from the organization’s title within 14 days. That includes removing a recently installed sign on the center’s facade and removing Trump’s name from the center’s website and other official materials.

Cooper, an appointee of former President Barack Obama,

also reversed Trump’s planned two-year closure of the Kennedy Center,

which scheduled to begin in July to accommodate a massive renovation of the building.

In a 94-page opinion,

the judge said the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees, which is made up primarily of Trump loyalists,

violated the 1964 federal law that created the center,

arguing that the statute makes clear that “the Kennedy Center shall named solely in the name of and to honor President Kennedy.”

The judge said that changing the name of the Kennedy Center would require congressional approval.

The ruling a major blow to Trump’s efforts to overhaul the institution to his liking ‒ granted partial summary judgment in a case brought by U.S. Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, an ex-officio member of the Kennedy’s Center board of trustees who opposed the name change. “Judge Cooper should be ashamed of himself!”

Trump said.

By making “a situation” the subject that actively “allows” the danger to flourish, the sentence becomes much more direct and dynamic.

Until I am free to do what I do better than anyone else, to bring this institution back to life physically,

financially and artistically, I have no interest in continuing the frustrating journey into “Never Never Land.”

Why a Judge Ordered Trump’s Name Removed from the Kennedy Center

In December, the center’s board voted to rename the Kennedy Center the “Trump-Kennedy Center.” Less than 24 hours later, new signs were installed on the building’s exterior that read “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.”

Trump has complained about “wake” programming at the Kennedy Center,

and has pledged to secure $257 million in federal dollars for much-needed renovations.

The judge said the board was not given enough notice to close the center.

In blocking plans to close the Kennedy Center for two years,

Cooper questioned the credibility of Executive Director Matt Flocka’s

conclusion that renovations could not be done without closing the center to the public.

The judge also said the center’s board “lacked any meaningful input”

when it voted to close the center on March 16. Trump announced the closure plans on Truth Social on February 1.

“The trustees learned of the plan to close the center through social media posts, along with the general public,

the judge said. “Deprived of time and information, they had no meaningful opportunity to consider perhaps the most important decision of the center’s lifetime since it opened in 1971.”

The controversy reflects a broader debate over the role of politics in American cultural institutions.

Since returning to office, Trump has made significant changes to the Kennedy Center,

including changing board members and promoting a new vision for the organization.

The move has drawn criticism from artists,

lawmakers and

members of the Kennedy family, who have argued that the center should remain a nonpartisan national cultural landmark.

Court Battle Ends with Trump’s Name Removed from Kennedy Center

The court’s decision is expected to be appealed,

but for now it restores the Kennedy Center’s original legal status and strengthens Congress’s authority over the institution’s name and governance.
